Hikoi – Kahikatea Tu Te Uru

Kahikatea Tu Te Uru 2014

Kahikatea is a project run by Auckland City Council and members of the homeless community. Its based around the urban Maori populace who are currently dislocated, have no connections to their cultural heritage, their Iwi or Hapu. this Hikoi was designed to follow the journey of Hape, from Hawaiki to Aotearoa highlighting the fact that when the great waka left Hawaiki, they were homeless. We followed his journey through the Waitamata, into the Tamaki estuary, and out west into the Manakau Harbour, finishing the journey at Karangahape Rd, where Hape welcomed the five great waka to Aotearoa. We stopped into each Hapu/Marae along the passage Hape took through Tāmaki Makaurau.
